A sore throat is any pain, irritation, or scratchiness in the throat that is worse when you swallow. Most commonly, sore throats are caused by a viral infection and these usually resolve on their own. However, it is recommended that you see a doctor, as there are several viral infections that can cause a sore throat as one of their symptoms. These infections or illnesses include the following: the common cold; flu (influenza); mononucleosis; measles; chicken pox; croup (which is a common childhood illness which is known by a harsh, barking cough); and whooping cough (pertussis). While sore throats caused by the common cold usually resolve on their own with over the counter remedies, other viral infections can be much more serious and require medical intervention to prevent lasting harm.
Strep throat (streptococcal infection) is a less common form of a sore throat which is caused by bacteria, which requires treatment with antibiotics – however, it is the most common cause of a sore throat among those caused by bacterial infections. If you suspect that you have strep throat, it is recommended that you see a doctor as soon as possible to begin a treatment of antibiotics. If you are prescribed antibiotics to treat strep throat, finish your regime of antibiotics.
In addition to viral and bacterial infections, there are other possible causes of sore throats. These include: allergies; dryness; irritants (such as pollution, cigarette or vape smoke); muscle strain; gastroesophageal reflex disease (GERD); HIV infection; or tumors.
